There were roughly 18,000 Swapfiets bicycles in Dutch capital Amsterdam in 2019. This made the commercial B2C bike sharing platform much more popular than the public alternative: OV-fiets (Public Transport Bike). Although the two platforms are listed here as competitors in shared bicycle mobility, their business models are very different. Whereas Swapfiets uses a subscription-based model where users pay a monthly fee to 'have' their own bicyce, OV-fiets is a station-based sharing platform, with depots located only near train stations. Aside from these two platforms, Amsterdam has many small tourism-oriented bicycle sharing and/or rental companies.
