Greenhouse gas emissions in Canada 2022, by subsector
Canada's total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were estimated at 685 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2022. Upstream oil and gas activities like natural gas production and mining at oil sands accounted for almost a quarter of this total, having emitted 176 MtCO₂e. Passenger cars were the second-highest emitters in Canada in 2022, with emissions of approximately 88 MtCO₂e. These came primarily from cars and light trucks.
