Between May 2022 and April 2023, the most number of media rights violations carried out in India were categorized under "Other threats to journalists" tallying 14 cases. This was followed by non-fatal attacks on journalists. The degree of press freedom in India has steadily declined since 2014. Criticism of the Modi-led government by news organizations was often met with retaliation in the form of raids, arrests, and physical attacks.
