Food frugality in grocery shopping in Mexico 2022-2023
According to Deloitte's Food Frugality Index, polled consumers have responded to the rising prices in food with frugal behaviors such as purchasing more affordable options of different products, including cheaper meats, store brands, and reducing food waste. Between September 2022 and May 2023, consumers in Mexico tended to be more frugal in their food spending, with the index staying at or over the September 2022 baseline (100). This trend went down to 89 in June 2023 and remained below 95 in later months, suggesting a slight decrease in frugality when purchasing food at grocery stores.
