Share of BECCS capacity of planned projects worldwide 2022-2030, by application
As of 2022, 100 percent of carbon dioxide (CO₂) captured by operational bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) projects was from fuel supply. Based on projects currently in the early and advanced stages of development, 42 percent of biogenic CO₂ could be captured by power and heat plants by 2030. To get on track with the 2050 net zero emissions scenario, 10 percent of CO₂ captured by BECCS projects would need to come from heavy industry, such as cement plants.
