Coal power emissions worldwide 2000-2022, by select country
The U.S. was the largest coal power emitter at the turn of the century, but rapid economic growth and soaring coal consumption saw China overtake the U.S. in 2006 as the sector's biggest emitter. China's coal power emissions have more than doubled since then, while the U.S.' have reduced by almost 60 percent, owing to a shift away from coal to natural gas and renewables.
