Stationary installation emissions under EU ETS 2005-2023, by sector
Fuel combustion was the biggest contributor to emissions covered by the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) in 2023, having produced 605 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). Emissions from the combustion of fuels, which primarily come from the power sector, have decreased by 58 percent since the EU ETS was launched in 2005. In regard to industrial activities, the biggest GHG polluter was the cement and lime sector, having emitted 105 MtCO₂e in 2023.
Most activity sectors covered by the EU ETS have observed overall emissions reductions since 2005, except for the production of chemicals and other metals (including aluminum).
