In 2020, the percentage of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions captured by carbon capture, use, and storage technologies (CCUS) amounted to just 0.12 percent. While this figure represents a small share of total worldwide emissions, the amount of captured CO2 has been on the rise since the beginning of the century. CCUS technologies involve capturing CO2 emitted from the burning of fossil fuels or from other industrial processes and sequestering the CO2 in underground storage facilities. In other cases, the captured CO2 can be used in manufacturing processes.
