In terms of product segmentation, street models outpace their counterparts as the best-selling category, yet off-road motorcycles, despite the country's high degree of urbanization, hold the position as the second-largest market segment. The current market landscape is characterized by a dominance of models exceeding 1,000 cc capacity, with BMW and Yamaha motors emerging as the most sought-after brands, closely followed by Kawasaki.
Over the past seven years, the export figures for motorcycles from the Netherlands have remained below 14,000 units. From 2017 to 2022, four out of five years experienced a decline in the global demand for motorbikes. However, the country’s import figures for new motorcycles have gradually increased over the years, with the highest figure in the last seven years recorded in 2022, at some 18,420 individual imports.
Mopeds popular among the Dutch
In the year 2022, moped registrations experienced a decline in some key European markets including the Netherlands, which saw two consecutive years of decline in moped registrations. Despite this downturn, the Netherlands maintained its status as the second-largest moped market in Europe.In 2022, moped (bromfiets) registrations in the country witnessed a notable upswing of nearly 40 percent from the preceding year. However, this positive trend was counterbalanced by a significant 42 percent drop in registrations of light mopeds (snorfiets), which was evident in the overall contraction of moped registrations in the Netherlands.
While benzene mopeds continue to hold their place as the most popular choice based on fuel type, the rise in popularity of Full Electric Vehicle (EV) mopeds has been remarkable.
Growth of electric mopeds and motorcycles
Between 2017 and 2022, registrations of full electric vehicle (EV) mopeds (bromfiets) have witnessed remarkable growth. This is especially noticeable in the substantial sixteen-fold increase in Full EV moped registrations from 2017 to 2022. In contrast, registrations for benzene mopeds in 2022 are slightly less than the figures for 2017.Similarly, electric motorcycle numbers have steadily risen for the past few years. In 2023, new electric motorcycle registrations increased by 18 percent. This surge in full EV moped sales not only reflects a growing environmental consciousness but also signifies a paradigm shift toward more sustainable electromobility options.
