Which Latin American countries produce avocado?
Because of its climatic characteristics, Latin America is the main avocado-producing region in the world. Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia, Chile, and Brazil are some of the major players in this segment. However, it is the North American country that stands out , accounting for a significant portion of the global production. In 2019, Mexico alone contributed with an output of close to a third of the volume of avocados in the market. In comparison, the Dominican Republic – which ranked second that year – produced over a fourth of that amount.The fruit’s harvest has been increasing in most of the leading producing countries over the last years. In Colombia, for instance, while close to 310 thousand metric tons of avocado were produced in 2015, the volume more than doubled in 2020. In Peru, it more than tripled in a matter of a decade.
