Individual wealth in Europe - statistics & facts

High net worth individuals (HNWIs) are those with a net worth over one million U.S. dollars excluding their primary residence. Wealth is inclusive of real assets, such as real estate, land, and vehicles, and financial assets such as stocks and bonds. The European country with the highest number of HNWIs in 2022 was Germany, followed by France and the United Kingdom. The number of HNWIs in the UK reached 2.89 million individuals in 2022, with forecasts expecting continued growth of this number to grow. The UK is also home to some of the top wealth holders globally. Roughly 27,000 individuals located in the UK are considered to be in the top 10 percent of global wealth holders.

Ultra high net worth individuals

To be considered an ultra-high-net-worth individual (UHNWI) you must have a net worth of over thirty million U.S dollars excluding primary residency. From selected European countries, under 125,000 individuals could be classified as ultra-wealthy as of 2022. The European country with the highest combined wealth of UHNWIs in 2022 was Germany, followed by France, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, in fourth place having had a combined value of over 100 billion U.S. dollars. Reviewing the number of UHNWIs from a global perspective, however, Germany and the UK are the only European countries to break into the top five as the United States alone is home to well over 100,000 UHNWIs.

How is HNWIs’ wealth allocated?

The total wealth of HNWIs include several types of assets: equity, cash and cash equivalents, real estate, fixed income, and alternative investments. The largest share of HNWI's accumulated assets worldwide is allocated to equity, which accounts for over 40 percent of total asset allocation of HNWIs worldwide, followed by the second largest share, which is allocated to fixed income securities. In the Asia-Pacific and Western Europe, the majority of HNWIs and UHNWIs assets were allocated to real assets such as fine art and real estate. Unlike North America where the vast majority of assets under management were allocated to financial securities such as stocks.
