Attitudes towards cinema are changing in Spain
The popularity of going to a movie theater is in decline in Spain, with the share of people in the Mediterranean country that went to the cinema in 2020 at 3.3 percent, down from a record high of 11.2 percent in 2001. Cinema theaters are most popular among those aged 14-19 years old, whereas in contrast, the population aged 65 years or older did not go to the cinema that often, with only 2.3 percent of respondents stating to have gone to the movies in 2020. The amount of cinema screens in Spain also experienced a downward trend in recent years, with figures reaching approximately 3.6 thousand screens in 2019 down from compared to 3.9 in 2010.

Many of the highest-grossing films in Spain are part of the franchise with the highest box office revenues of all time: Marvel Cinematic Universe. The superhero movies amassed 18.42 billion U.S. dollars worldwide with all its Marvel-based works. The America space franchise created by George Lucas (Stars Wars) amounted to 9.31 billion U.S. dollars in box office revenues, ranking it second on the list of highest-grossing franchises of all time.
