The global revenue of the cruise industry has been increasing since 2007 and was expected to rise to around 57 billion U.S. dollars by 2027. Each cruise passenger brings a revenue of around 1,700 U.S. dollars on average, most of which is made up by the price of a cruise ticket. However, passenger expenses are almost as high as revenues, leaving around 180 U.S. dollars per passenger in profit.
The largest source market for cruise passengers was the the United States in 2016, with 11.52 million passengers. In comparison, the number of passengers from the second and third largest source markets, China and Germany, amounted to just 2.1 and 2.02 million passengers respectively. The leading international travel destination for U.S. travelers, as forecasted by Travel Leaders Group agents, was Caribbean cruises in 2015. The most popular domestic destination was also a cruise, this time to Alaska.
