Distribution of renters and owners in the U.S. 2022, by income
Homeowners with a mortgage in the United States earned higher a household income, on average, compared to renters in 2022. About 21 percent of people who lived in a rental home in that year earned under 20,000 U.S. dollars. Among owners with a mortgage, this share was less than five percent.
