Share of black civilians killed by security agents over total Brazil 2021, by state
In 2021, the share of Black people killed by the police was higher than the share of the black population in all the Brazilian states listed. In Pernambuco, the difference between the proportion of black population and black people killed by the police was of 34.3 percentage points. The Brazilian state with the smallest difference was Piauí, where 73.4 percent of the population was black while nearly 75 percent of deaths cause by the police were black civilians. Except for São Paulo and Piauí, more than 80 percent of civilians killed by security agents were black in all states covered in this study.
