Independence Day in Mexico is an important national holiday officially celebrated on September 16th. Festivities start the evening before, when the president of Mexico re-enacts the "Grito de Independencia", an historical event that is considered the beginning of the independence movement. Celebrations include music, fireworks and lots of traditional food. In 2018, 63.9 percent of participants in a telephone interview were planning to celebrate this holiday by taking part in a gathering or party at home. In contrast, around 4.6 percent had the intention to join the festivities by watching the event on TV.
